Director of Plant Operations – BSN

The Company

BSN Sports is the leading direct marketer and distributor of sporting goods to the school and league markets in North America, and with ~$1 billion in revenue, is the largest division of Varsity Brands. The company reaches its individual and institutional customers via direct sales, catalog, and e-commerce channels. BSN has grown substantially in the years prior to acquisition by Bain, largely through acquisition of smaller competitors.

The Role

In 2016, BSN acquired Lids Team Sports (B2B business) from the Lids Sports Group, adding Lids’ unique market access to youth sport programs and a large custom decorating facility and distribution center located in Indianapolis. The Indianapolis facility has ~500 employees, runs a two-shift operation, and services BSN’s traditional institutional customers and its growing ecommerce business. The former Director of Operations for the Indianapolis facility, Trent Smith, has recently taken responsibility for all three BSN facilities (Dallas, Sacramento, Indianapolis) as Vice President, Internal Decorations, and the company is seeking to hire a new Director of Operations for Indianapolis. The new Director will be responsible for all operational functions for the Indianapolis facility and achieve objectives for profitable growth, quality, and operational productivity, reporting the Vice President.

Experience & Requirements


At least 10 years of progressive operations leadership; able to design and implement a site-level operations management system, communicate objectives, and measure progress.

Experience managing pick-pack and distribution operations, including transportation and customer fulfillment.

Expertise in best-practice order fulfillment standards and metrics including customer order fill rates, productivity, inventory turnover, forecast accuracy, and quality

Experience and training in continuous improvement systems and principles; LEAN, TPS, Six Sigma etc.

Experience forecasting, budgeting, and leading quarterly and annual business planning processes; expert?level financial, quantitative, and analytical skills.

Experience managing capital improvement initiatives and expansion plans during ongoing operations.

Demonstrated ability to recruit, retain, manage, and develop top talent; a natural mentor.

Excellent communication skills, including written, verbal and presentation skills; comfortable and credible with both internal stakeholders, customers, and external audiences.

Hands-on player/coach; strong results orientation; continuous improvement and customer service mindset

A flexible, dynamic, self-demanding and proactive individual; able to motivate him/herself and others; a natural bias for action and ability to deal with ambiguity.
