Vice President of Accounting

The Company

Founded in 2001, and based in Phoenix, AZ, Modigent is a leading provider of commercial HVAC and plumbing installation, retrofit and repair services to customers in education, municipal, and healthcare end markets. The company is non-union and operates coast to coast in 8 states across the Sun Belt Region. In August 2022, OMERS Private Equity bought Pueblo Mechanical from Huron Capital and will continue to provide resources and expertise to further accelerate the company’s growth and strategic expansion through organic and inorganic means. Today, Modigent has grown to $600M in top line revenue through an emphasis on inorganic growth. It operates 15 branches/operating companies and employes ~1200 total professionals with service technicians representing ~20% of that total across the US.

The Role

To leverage the company’s increasing size/scale and capitalize on opportunities for further cohesion across its operating divisions, Modigent is seeking to hire a Vice President of Accounting to drive value and increase professionalization within its finance function. The role will primarily be responsible for overseeing the corporate accounting and tax functions as well as building the team, processes, and structure to support future growth. The role reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and will collaborate with stakeholders across Modigent’s distributed branch network. Ideally, the role will be based at company headquarters in Phoenix, AZ or within the Southwestern U.S. with the willingness and ability to spend 25%+ time in Phoenix, where the majority of the Accounting Team is based.

Experience & Requirements

1. Relevance. Experience in a distributed manufacturing or field-based services company of relevant size and complexity; >$500M revenue, highly distributed. Prior enterprise-wide Head of Accounting experience is required.
a. Experience working with highly decentralized financial systems and data repositories, requiring collaboration between centralized functions and regional business partners.
b. Experience in high-growth, transformational, and/or private equity environments highly preferred.

2. Functional Expertise. Oversee daily accounting functions across the enterprise and prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual consolidation and close in a multi-system, geographically dispersed environment. Functions include:
a. Process: Policies and Controls Definition. Optimization and deployment of effective systems, accounting policies and financial controls that comply with federal, state and local standards, nationally.
b. Financial Reporting. Direction and management of financial accounting activities both internal and externally in accordance with U.S. GAAP, Sarbanes-Oxley requirements, and best practices.
• Experience with Percentage of Completion (POC) accounting methodology strongly preferred
• Experience in accounting system adoption/implementation preferred but not required
• Specific accounting software experience with Sage Intacct preferred but not required
c. Audit Compliance. Coordination of external parties for annual audit, tax planning and compliance activities
d. Organizational Leadership. Management and supervision of the operations of an accounting department, including the design/redesign of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department’s goals.
• Required Leadership Experience: AP, AR, C2P, P2P, Financial Reporting, Tax, Governance
• Preferred Leadership Experience: Organizational design/team buildout
• Broader finance functional knowledge preferred but not required (i.e. requisite end-to-end finance and accounting experience with CFO successor potential)
e. Mergers & Acquisition. Support all accounting integration efforts relative to acquisitions ranging from $25M-$250M in revenue.
f. Decision Support. Partner with CFO, company leadership, and investors in development of operating benchmarks and budgets and implementation of corrective actions where required.

3. Change Leadership. Superior leadership, relationship, and stakeholder management skills. Removes roadblocks through an adaptable, low-ego, hard-working, and field-forward approach. Nimble and entrepreneurial in nature with ability to operate and influence across levels and with business partners.

4. Cultural Fit. An energetic, pragmatic, and assertive leader with a hands-on mentality and strategic leadership qualities. Player/coach approach – leads from the front and by example. Able to build a team, including hiring and retaining top talent. Embraces a decentralized approach to leadership and business management. Comfortable operating through policy, process, and influence vs. centralized, direct control.
