The Company

PureField Ingredients produces quality food ingredients and biofuels from pure, natural Midwest grains under the Heartland brand. PureField operates two integrated plants in Russell, Kansas, including the largest vital wheat gluten manufacturing facility in North America, delivering high quality, high protein ingredients to leading consumer food and pet food manufacturers, and one of the most cost-efficient and lowest carbon intensity ethanol production facilities in the United States, serving the West Coast markets where low carbon fuel is in high demand. PureField also converts production byproducts into animal nutrition products that are high sources of protein and fiber.

The Role

The R&D Scientist will support a range of projects designed to build and broaden PureField’s wheat protein product portfolio and applications technology expertise and align those capabilities with customer-defined needs. They will work with cross functional teams to drive innovation and develop scalable processes that align with industry standards and regulations.
The position will report to the Director of R&D and be based at company headquarters in Kansas City, KS.

Experience & Requirements

• 5-10 years of experience in R&D, product development and/or innovation in the plant protein industry. Ideally have experience in industry or education with water based extractions.
• Proven track record of successful product implementation from concept to commercialization on a fast timeline.
• Experience with isolate, concentrate, texturized, and other value-added protein products.
• Experience developing and commercializing food ingredients.
• Experience working in a laboratory or R&D environment.
• Industry leading understanding of ingredient functionality, product evaluation, health and nutrition, food manufacturing processes, microbiology, quality assurance principles, and market research practices.
• Understanding of Quality and EHS standards in the food industry: Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Safe Quality Food (SQF), Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP).
• Strong problem solving and analytical skills in support of metrics-, data- and process-oriented objectives.
• Excellent communication skills, including written, verbal and presentation skills; comfortable and credible with both internal stakeholders and external audiences.
• Highly organized and detail-oriented with a strong action bias.
